Types of a student visa
Tier 4(General) student visa:
Students willing to jet to the UK for higher education with an age of 16 years or more are eligible to apply for this visa type.
Tier 4(Child) student visa:
Students between the ages of 4 and 15 willing to study their primary education in the UK are eligible to opt for this type. The critical thing to note in this case is that they can undertake education from private institutions.
While you start planning your shift to the host country at least a year back from the day the course commences, you can apply for the student visa only six months before your course commencement.
The validity of a student visa depends highly on your age and degree. If you are there for a degree course and are 18 years of age or older, you can stay up to 5 years in the UK. Whereas, if you are there for primary or secondary education, a non-degree course, your stay on this visa is valid for two years.
Just as staying in the UK is limited to age and course, traveling is too. In case your course duration is six months or less, you can reach the UK up to a week before whereas, a month prior is accepted if your course duration is more than six months.
The sad part about UK’s norms is that you won’t be getting a work permit to undertake employment, but you will have to get yourself a work visa.
