How long does it take to complete Medicine in Germany?

Medicine or study of medicine in any German University is taught only in the German language. Thus, it requires candidates to acquire German Language skills. A regular Medicine course lasts for 6 years and 3 months.Also, with studienkolleg the duration of the course might extend up to 8 years and 3 months.
However, those who don't have the knowledge of the German language will have to spend an additional year in a language preparatory course. In a scenario like these, Medicine in Germany may take up to 7 years and 3 months.

In addition to this, for starting the Medicine programme in Germany, it is only possible if the student has a high school education certificate equivalent to German abitur, except for students who passed out of IB board.

Therefore, non-IB board students in India, will have to enroll themselves with M-Kurs Studienkolleg in Germany, for one year upon clearing aufnahmeprüfung.  It eventually concludes with the final assessment test of "Feststellungsprüfung" (FSP).

 

The study of Medicine in Germany is divided into four stages.

Pre-clinical Phase:

During this stage, the student gets introduced to some of the most prominent theories and topics in medicine. These include the basics of human anatomy for further improvement in treatment.

This phase comprises four semesters, along with mandatory first aid training and 90 days of nursing service. It ends with the first phase of medical examinations known as Examination for Physicians or Ärztliche Prüfung.

Clinical Phase:

From the 5th semester, the clinical-stage lasts for 3 years in the medical course. Further, It comprises six semesters and concludes with phase 2 examinations. This section consists of the most significant part of one's medical studies in Germany. It involves the study of internal medicines, surgical subjects, nervous and sensory systems, general medicines followed by an internship. These are the core concepts of medicine one must know while participating in hospital environments.

Practical Year:

On completion of the pre-clinical and clinical phase, the University consigns them with taking care of the patients and focuses on beside training. Such supervision is done under the guidance of the faculties. It lets one participate in more real-life training sessions to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Its phase comprises a mandatory 16 weeks of each of internal medicine, bedtime clinical training, surgery, and an elective subject. This phase, too, is concluded with an examination

State Examination & Approbation:

State examination and Approbation are the last steps to become a verified medical practitioner in Germany. Approbation (regulation of the licensing of doctors), takes place after completion of the exams of the above three stages.

It intends to demonstrate that the holder of such a degree has acquired the required theoretical and practical skills. On completion of this exam, the student can avail of the medical license in Germany.

Such a practitioner's license is called Approbation or Berufserlaubnis in the German language, and it's legitimate for the holder's entire life.

How many years does it take to complete a Medicine course from a
German University?

In Germany, the medical curriculum consists of 6 years, further divided into various semesters for students proficient in the German language. However, for students with little or no knowledge of German, will have to enrol themselves for a language preparatory course, stretching the overall period of study and training to 7 years and 3 months.

Is NEET required for Medicine in Germany?

It is a prerequisite for a student to attain 90% in 12th Standard to become eligible for studying Medicine in Germany. On fulfilling this requirement, there is no need to appear for NEET tests.
