German Masters Degree

  • Postgraduate/Master's education in German follows a standard European format which forms a part of the Bologna Process.
  • This indicates that German Masters degrees are 'second cycle' qualifications, where Bachelor's degree (first cycle) usually precedes the Master's course and prepares a student for a PhD (third cycle).
  • Most Masters degrees in Germany are taught courses which comprise a complete series of academic modules, followed by an independent project.

Course Length

  • German Master's programme typically lasts for either 1.5 years or 2 years.
  • The 2-year degree will be worth 120 ECTS credits. One will earn 90 of these through modules, coursework and exams and the remaining 30 for the project.
  • Whereas, a 1.5-year degree will be worth 90 ECTs, further divided into modules, coursework, examination and project.

Degree Types

German Masters degrees are classified as either consecutive or non-consecutive:

  • Consecutive Masters degrees are closely related to the student's undergraduate degree. Let us say the student studied BSc in Biology or Chemistry, he/she must study MSc in Biochemistry.
  • Non-consecutive Masters degrees focus further on the highly specialised subject area. These courses require an undergraduate degree with practical experience. There are chances that these curses might charge fees.

Normally, most German Masters degrees are consecutive programmes and require an appropriate Bachelor's degree.

English-taught Programmes

Irrespective of the course you select, German English-taught Course Universities provide free education to students with over 1900 courses. There are very few universities whose medium of instruction is in English, and due to limited availability of seats, it is comparatively difficult to get admissions.

The limitations of English taught programmes is the high competition rivalled with a limited number of seats. Apart from the tough competition, there is the Numerus Clause (NC) attached to the seats. Often, students have to adjust with the course subjects, in order to get into an English taught German Programme.

For admission, the first thing you may have to present is an English Language test results like TOEFL or IELTS. These test results are used to ascertain a candidate's proficiency in the language. It is recommended to have at least 6.5 bands to get into a reputed German English-taught University.

German-taught Programme

All the programmes that are available in an English-taught Course University are available in a German-taught Course University. The course structure and syllabus remain the same, the only difference being the medium of instruction.

However, it is recommended to opt for a German-taught programme, rather than English-taught. The sole reason for this is that you have better career prospects in and around Germany, as the majority of the population here is German-speaking.

Also, if you have lower grades and are unable to get a seat in the English taught programme, one may apply for admission in German taught programme with some of the top-ranked Universities. One will also benefit in education as the German taught programmes are innovative and interdisciplinary with an option to intern with the top German Brands.

Along with an opportunity to learn a language, one gets more course options as German taught programmes have a diversified, core and specialised subjects. In addition to this, it does away with the requirement of IELTS/GRE/Work Experience, liberalising the admission essentials.

Bilingual-Programmes

German Universities provide bilingual courses wherein partly the course is in English language and the rest in the German language. The courses offered under this option have different admission criteria as compared to the above two programmes.
